Night Rain

by Miriam E. Waters

I smelled the rain and almost tasted its sweetness long before the greedy drops bit into my skin and crept into my dreams.

The wind swept up from the edges of the lawn and began a wild romp through the trees – whispering as she flew.  Shadows flittered all night on the bedroom walls – bowing with a courtly pleasure – nodding in easy agreement with the stolen secrets.

Laughing echoes from the wind shook the windows in their casings.  They colored my hollow dreams and filled them with faceless dancers. The soothing voice of rain-spattered leaves filled the night.

The green green giants were softened by the soothing caress of darkness. The sudden wind tonight was fresh, free, and exciting – threatening madness and destruction -- even the tallest of the trees bowed in respect – nodding in their frenzied need to throw off their usual calm and dance, dance, dance.
